USMLE Step 1 Exam - The Ultimate USMLE Prep For Audio Learners
Let's face it, some of us have a hard time learning just by reading from a textbook, and if this is a difficulty of yours, it becomes a difficult task to learn the essential material required for the USMLE Step 1 exam. I too had the same difficulties in preparing for my Step 1 exam, so I decided to put together an audio program derived from a study guide and from the question banks I went through.
You can do the same thing, and even if you learn well by reading, turning your high-yield notes into an audio program can give you that extra boost you'll need to raise your score into a more competitive range. Anybody can use this trick to gain a few extra points on their USMLE exams.
Build your own USMLE Step 1 audio program with these FOUR steps:
1 - Do a question bank slowly and thoroughly
It is essential that you go through a question bank very slowly, taking exception notes on every single important fact and concept. The better and more thorough you are, the better your results will be. Ideally, you will break your question notes into separate disciplines so that when you create your audio files, they will be as organized as possible
2 - Read your notes into your computer's recording software
Most computers have recording software these days, so figure out yours and create a recording of your notes. Ideally, you will turn each discipline into a separate file, so you can pick and choose where you feel you are weaker and focus on that.
3 - Turn your audio file into and MP3
It is simple to do, simply click on the file and save it as an MP3 file. Then, put it onto your mobile audio device. The key is to create separate playlists so that if you want to listen to a certain area, you can do so without having to search through your notes.
4 - Use your audio notes when you usually wouldn't study
The key to getting the benefits of this trick is to listen to your notes in situations where you could normally not study. When you are exercising, driving, doing chores around the house, etc. The trick is to saturate your brain with your Step 1 prep notes so that you can almost recite it in your sleep. This trick, in addition to using a regular study guide, will help you gain that extra bit of knowledge that can propel your score into a competitive range.

At what point in medical school is the USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 taken?
Typically, when is it taken?
Step 1 is typically taken after the first two years of med school, and the Step 2 (Clinical Skills and Clinical Knowledge) tests are taken sometime during the next two years. I took mine at the beginning fourth year.
The Step 3 is usually not taken during medical school at all, but after or during the internship year. Different programs have different requirements. I just took (and passed) it during my third year of residency. All that's absolutely required is that you pass it before finishing residency.
